Thinking traps

Ten common cognitive errors to catch.

Watch for

  • All-or-nothing: “If I’m not perfect, I’m a failure.”
  • Overgeneralizing: one bad thing means everything is bad.
  • Mental filter: hearing only the one negative.
  • Disqualifying the positive: the good stuff doesn’t count.
  • Jumping to conclusions: mind reading, fortune telling.
  • Magnifying or minimizing.
  • Emotional reasoning: “I feel it, so it’s true.”
  • Should statements: beating yourself up with “should.”
  • Labeling: “I spilled the milk. I’m such a loser.”
  • Personalizing: it’s all about me — and not in a good way.
