Practice before you need it

Skills feel awkward at first. Practice them when you’re calm so they’re automatic in a crisis.

Why

Like any new skill, these work best once they’re familiar. If you practice in easier moments, the skill will be there when you need it. Many people resist these at first and later call them life-saving.

How

  • Pick one skill a day from your Help Now list and try it when you’re in the blue zone.
  • Set reminders to pause and be mindful (Settle’s daily check-in is one).
  • Bring awareness to one routine thing — brushing teeth, making coffee.
  • When it gets hard, say: “Just this one moment, just this one task.”

Crisis skills aren’t for everything

Crisis survival skills are for getting through intense, short-term moments. They aren’t meant for everyday problems or for building a life worth living — other skills handle that.
