Radical acceptance
Stop fighting reality. Pain is unavoidable; suffering is what fighting it adds.
What it is
Accepting something completely — with mind, heart, and body. It is not approval, not passivity, and not giving up on change. Change actually requires acceptance first; rejecting reality turns pain into suffering.
What to accept
- Reality is what it is — the facts of the past and present.
- Everyone’s future has some limits.
- Everything has a cause.
- Life can be worth living even with pain in it.
Step by step
- Notice you’re fighting reality (“It shouldn’t be this way”).
- Remind yourself: this is what happened, and it can’t be changed.
- Remember there are causes that led up to this moment.
- Accept with your whole self — breath, half-smile, willing hands, prayer, imagery.
- List what you’d do if you had accepted it — then do those things.
- Cope ahead: rehearse accepting what seems unacceptable.
- Notice body sensations; let disappointment or grief come.
- Do pros and cons if you find yourself resisting.
