Describe
The situation, just the facts. What exactly are you reacting to?
Express
Your feelings and opinions — don’t assume they’re obvious. “I feel…,” “I want…” rather than “You should…”
Assert
Ask clearly, or say no clearly. People can’t read your mind.
Reinforce
Explain the upside for them of saying yes (or accepting your no). Thank them afterward.
(stay) Mindful
Keep your focus on the goal. “Broken record” — calmly repeat. Ignore attacks and changes of subject.
Appear confident
Steady voice, eye contact, upright posture. No whispering or “I’m not sure.”
Negotiate
Be willing to give to get. Offer alternatives. Turn the tables: “What do you think we should do?”
